Arthur Schopenhauer
1788–1850
One of the first philosophers to declare that he was an atheist, Schopenhauer contended that the universe was not a rational place. He was the first great Western thinker to study Vedic and Buddhist philosophy seriously.
A natural pessimist
Born into a wealthy family, Schopenhauer never needed to work. Instead, he devoted his life to private study. For much of his life he was a disappointed man, and it was not until he reached the age of 63 that he finally enjoyed the critical success he craved. Not surprisingly, his thinking is on the whole pessimistic, revolving around the concept of what he termed the “will.”
